A great leader is called to be a servant foremost and that implies a character of humility. But very often leadership appears to be a breeding ground for pride. Joseph “The Dreamer” eluded this pitfall because whether in the Pit, Prison or Palace he “Constantly Gave God Glory”.
Joseph was a favorite son but a hated brother and this landed him in the pit, and then sold as a slave. When it seemed like the right time to take revenge on his brothers he refused, forgave them and gave ultimate glory to God.
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
Joseph encountered some extremely difficult trials but his continued practice of Glorifying, Praising, and giving God all the credit was the catalyst for his faithful walk with God.
His consistent reference to God in the form of questions reflected his lifestyle.
- “How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Genesis 39:9 (NIV)
- “Do not interpretations belong to God? Genesis 40: 8 (NIV)
- “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? Genesis 50:21(NIV)
Even when naming his sons Manasseh and Ephraim he was cognizant to elevate God.
Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh and said, “It is because God has made me forget all my trouble and my entire father’s household.” The second son he named Ephraim and said, “It is because God has made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.”
Genesis 41:51-52 (NIV)
Joseph “The Dreamer”, whatever circumstances he encountered, his consistency in Glorifying God remained steadfast and immovable.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 15:58 (NKJV)
I am persuaded that Joseph’s life verse was “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
I therefore recommend that each of us adopt this commendable practice.
